About us
For three generations, The Phoenix has delighted Washingtonians with the finest from Mexico. Betty and Bill Hays visited Mexico in the 1950’s and fell in love with the people and the culture, but especially, the folk art. They returned from their travels in 1955 with a station wagon full of merchandise and opened for business in Georgetown.
Today, we continue in their tradition. John, their son, his wife, Sharon, and daughter, Samantha travel throughout Mexico twice a year. We work directly with the artists and collect jewelry, folk art and fine art, full of color and imagination for our clients back in Washington.
The Phoenix has evolved and changed over the years. We now also feature fine jewelry from around the world, and contemporary clothing, such as EILEEN FISHER, Flax and Isda & Co.
Some of our favorite jewelry designers, such as Nava Zahavi, from Israel, and Bernd Wolf, from Germany, work with one-of-a-kind stones set in 18k and 24k gold. Simon Sebbagg from Miami, designs bold modern pieces in sterling silver and semi-precious stone. Michael Michaud, from Connecticut takes his inspiration from nature and transforms his ideas into sculptural jewelry of bronze and semi-precious stone.
Our clothing is designed for women who appreciate great style and fabulous fabrics. It is easy to wear, easy to care for, and great for travel. The designs of EILEEN FISHER are among our favorites. The Phoenix has carried her line for nearly twenty years. Our wonderful collection of accessories ranges from hand painted silk scarves from Boston, to leather bags from Italy and art to wear jackets from Guatemala.
We’re still having a great time here in Georgetown. We love working with creative artists, bringing their work to Washington, and presenting it to our customers, who appreciate the best.
After 50 years, we begin a new adventure, thephoenixdc.com! We hope you enjoy shopping online, and if your travels bring you to Georgetown, stop in and say ‘Hello’!
