Originally from Virginia, Tamara Mayne studied Studio Art and Economics at the University of Virginia before moving to New York City. After working a series of jobs in finance and tech, her desire to work in a creative field led her to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Technology to study Graphic Design. She was working as a designer and art director in 2012 when she decided to make candles as gifts for family and became obsessed with aromatherapy and the art of candle making. Tamara founded Brooklyn Candle Studio in 2013; her company remains an independent candle design and manufacturing studio. Their small team handcrafts the candles with a blend of soy wax, essential oils, and phthalate-free perfume oils. Their company uses 100% soy wax derived from American-grown soy beans for an eco-friendly, clean burn and lead-free cotton core wicks are primed with vegetable based wax. The candles are preservative and petroleum-free, cruelty-free and 100% vegan. They are an eco-conscious company, opting to use recyclable packaging and shipping materials and as little plastic as possible. Their collections are ethically produced by their small team in their studio space in Industry City, a hub of of makers, designers, artists, and small businesses in Brooklyn, New York.
